Lower cholesterol and less cardiac death are associated with a better lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle generally makes you feel subjectively better while also actually improving your cardiovascular health status. It was reported by Umea University on March 3, 2016, an improved lifestyle was observed to lead to lower cholesterol and not as much cardiac death. There has been a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in northern Sweden due to improvements in lifestyles.

High cholesterol levels are the most common risk factor for heart attacks. Over the past couple of decades cholesterol levels have overall decreased in northern Sweden. Due to observations that medical drugs only account for a third of the decrease in cholesterol levels the decreased risk of cardiovascular disease seems to be due to lifestyle changes.

Mats Eliasson, Professor at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, says the most significant reason for the lower cholesterol in the population of Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties in northern Sweden is most likely due to changes in lifestyle. Such lifestyle changes could include decreased consumption of fat along with increased consumption of fiber from fruit, vegetables and grains.

This study has been published in the European Heart Journal. It has been recognized that decreasing cholesterol levels in Western populations is the primary reason for decreasing mortality which is due to coronary heart disease. Although the risk of cardiovascular disease has been greatly decreased in the past 20 years it remains the most common cause of death in Sweden, particularly from heart attacks.

High cholesterol is the most significant cause of cardiovascular disease. Smoking and high blood pressure follow as significant causes of heart disease. It is therefore significant that lower levels of cholesterol are being seen due to improved lifestyles since this should lead to lower rates of cardiovascular disease.
